Man asked to buy silicone wedding ring after dropping 7 months salary on diamond

Derek Wainwright is the first to admit that he's a Type A personality, always prepared for the next thing about to hit him. But he never saw the request of his soon-to-be-fiance, Heather Michaels, coming.

Derek and Heather met at their local Crossfit gym six years ago and instantly hit it off after arguing about whether or not is was ok include sugar in a diet. Heather insisted that a little sugar was good for one's body and offered to prove it by taking Derek out for ice cream later that week. When he woke up alive the next morning, he knew she was the one.

They had been dating for four years when Derek began his plan of asking for Heather's hand in marriage. He did all of his homework, including asking her friends and family about her dream proposal and ideal engagement ring. He also met with a financial planner to carefully budget for the ring.

"It was a rough seven months. I made up this elaborate lie to Heather that my job had demoted me. I lived off Ramen. I even moved back in with my parents."

Derek finished making payments last month. By that time the return policy had expired. And then it was last week's conversation that made Derek's heart (and stomach) sink.

"The subject of rings came up. And she says, you know, with all of the working out that we do, I think it's best if we just get those cheap silicone rings. Walmart even has them for like five bucks! You don't even need to get me an engagement ring."

Derek was left in shock. And a $24,000 engagement ring from Tiffany's.

He has yet to pop the question but does plan to go the silicone ring route because, as he states, "A happy wife is a happy life."
