New year, new you. This year is gonna be different, for some reason. This is the year you renew the gym membership and actually go. Don't call it a comeback! You've been putting here for years. You put yourself through a barrage of things you truly don't enjoy until you just give up.
The media is about to come out with a barrage of recycled content based on sophomore thermodynamics: "Weight Loss = Calories Burned - Calories Consumed." Millions of Americans are going to hop onto their human version of a mouse wheel and anxiously wait for the calorie counter to run it's little algorithm until they've burned off dinner and that's supposed to make sense because science. High school physics class level science.
After about 3-8 weeks they'll ghost the gym like a bad Tinder date. The magic word is "homeostasis". Your body burns/stores fat as a result of your eating habits and activity level. Basically, your body composition is a result of your lifestyle. You gained a bunch of weight over the holidays because you ate a bunch of junk food and sat around for a couple weeks. By just returning to your normal eating/exercise habits, you'll return to normal "homeostasis" in about 3-8 weeks anyways. Without going into the math, if you disrupt a system and let it return back to normal, the time it takes is roughly 3-4x the disruption period. Crash dieting and exercising are just an unsustainable way of getting there.
If you're unhappy with your current homeostasis, don't expect it to change by forcing yourself to do things you don't like doing. You'll hate it. You can't expect to be happy with your body if you're unhappy with the lifestyle it requires. Part of growing up is learning to be comfortable with who you are and what you are capable of being. No matter what 2020 brings your way, you can always put on some high-waisted yoga pants.
